These are just a taste of the questions to come on Patapātai, the Māori general knowledge quiz show that sees kura go head to head in a bid to find out ko wai ngā hinengaro koi o te motu!

Just as Tāne ascended the heavens to obtain the 3 kete of knowledge, in Patapātai students also progress through three distinct rounds of competition.  The first wāhanga covers general knowledge, the second tests curriculum subjects and Te Reo Māori, and the last round challenges tauira in the arts, performance and entertainment.

Host Jamus Webster says the variety of different games means every school is in with a chance.  “The school that’s the strongest in Maths and Science might not necessarily have the strongest Reo speakers.”

The real wild card, he says, is the third round where students can be asked anything from “sing a note in the key of G” to “name this waiata-āringa” in the charades kēmu.  “Kura that didn’t do so well in the first two rounds can come back and steal the win from behind.  It can get pretty exciting!”

Teams are made up of ten students with 3 competing on the buzzers. To help students put their best teams forward kura are allowed to sub players in and out at the end of each round.  Producer Fiona Apanui-Kupenga says this makes kura think strategically about how they’re going to play the game.  “Because of the diverse range of kaupapa, every team member is valuable.  It’s great to see the strengths of different students emerging in the competition”.

12 kura have taken up the challenge and the show features both Wharekura and Secondary School students from Invercargill to Te Araroa.

Tune in to see which school will come out on top and be crowned the inaugural Patapātai Champion 2015!
